Hi Jack,
You have asked for feedback on your tips to growing dahlias and I will gladly oblige you. Your advice is the best I've come across.
Around this time last year I found your page and was delighted to find the answer to why tubers had never succeeded before, why I could not even find tubers in the ground - over-watering before there's any surface growth. Hurrah for that one specific tip! I took time to ensure my soil had drainage and fuel for the plants, waited until the day after it had rained and planted them all with sufficient stakes. I covered them to keep them dry until the first shoots popped their heads out, then watered and protected from slugs and was rewarded with a mighty row of varying dahlias. All thanks to your great advice.
I did not debud but that may be something to consider in the future. Also, I did not consider their size when I stored them and would now like to plant them in a border where size will matter but it's all a learning curve!
I've attached a few photos for your perusal. It may not be the tidiest of flowerbeds and the flowers may not be show-worthy but I was delighted with the beautiful blossoms.
Thank-you kindly for taking time to share your knowledge in such a practical way.
Kind Regards,
Pam Blything

The ten dahlia tubers supplied by Jack are all second to none. Large, individually wrapped, and promptly dispatched. Equally, I would compliment Jack on an old fashioned character which is rarely seen today. On the several occasions that I have telephoned for advice, Jack has explained things in lengthy detail, fully understanding the limitations of a novice. I would certainly highly recommend JRG Dahlias as for me, garden centre dahlias are a thing of the past.

Hi Jack,

I want to let you know how I did with Amber Festival this year. This was my first year raising it, and it had not been shown before this season in the US. Initially, I was bothered with small green centres, as the weather was quite hot this summer. When the weather cooled, the blooms really improved and the green centres were totally absent. When we show a bloom that is not listed in our Classification Manual, then we have to put it on the Classification Table where Senior judges classify it for us. In the four shows that it was exhibited, all of the judging was identical: Class 310 BB (4-6 inches) FD Light blend of yellow and bronze.

This was rather unfortunate, as Class 310 is one of the most vicious classes that we have. There are two varieties that tend to dominate: Hy Clown and Hamilton Lillian. However, I am happy to report to you that I got a first in each of three shows!!!! The last was at the Midwest Dahlia Conference's Annual Show (second most prominent in the Midwest--National being first) in St. Louis, Missouri. There were about 30 blooms in the class, and my Amber Festival took first place.

I am going to email the classification committee chairman to make sure they have the correct information: BB FD LB of yellow and bronze. Initally offered in 1999 by the originator, Jack Gott from England, who grew it from a sport of Gateshead Festival. First shown in the US in 2001.

Jack, I hope the above information is correct, but if it is not, please let me know.

Thanks,

Rick

'surprise' freestyle. I wait with anticipation to see what it is. Also
thank you for indicating by sending three labels that I could make three
plants out of Fascination. I imagine they will be pretty small this year
but .....from small things...... Thank you too, for the Dahlia guide.
Most interesting and helpful.
Happy Easter
