My New Job
I will try and show you around the garden
at
Yewbarrow House
Grange over Sands
Cumbria
My new job, on the 6th March 2006, after working as an
electrician all my life, first contracting then in a milk factory for 10 years
and the last 28years sparking in a paper mill I decided to take early
retirement. I started a new challenge as a head gardener at a big house with 4
and a half acres of ground, it is nice not having to work weekends any more. It
is definitely a challenge as I have never seen some of the plants that are grown
in this garden never mind in the North of England.

One view from the top of the garden
looking over Morecambe Bay
I will try and show you a small part of the garden
with some photos I have take as the year progresses.
First we take a look at the entrance to this beautiful garden.

The Fuchsia arch is one of the first view of the garden as you come through the
main gates
with a small border in front of the the wall with a mixture of plants.

To the right of the garden there is a ornamental
carved seat that blends in to the garden
as you look from this seat you get the first view though the pine trees over
Morecambe Bay.

This is the view from the seat
The plant in the foregrounds in nicknames the fibre optic plant.

Past the seat and we start to climb the the steps to the ten flower beds
that are changed around each year, there are six dahlia beds two that are of
mixed dahlias,
two that have the red dark leaf dahlia Grenadier and two that have the orange
dahlia Silvia.
two mixed beds with Mexican plants, the next two beds have banana and cannas
plant.

The view as you walk up the steps among the dahlias

From the top of the steps you will see this nice shrub the Bottle Brush tree,
turn around and look at the magnificent view, a site not to be missed as you
wander around the garden.

Walk through the arch gate in to the gravel garden you will see the fifteen foot
plants of Echium
with there long spikes of tiny flowers, the bees love them, on the other wall
you can see the clematis Pink Montana
in the gravel garden you will see Aeoniums and Giraffe plant with many more plant that
I do not know the names.

This is the Red Acer path with the Cordylins to the
left and Azaleas to the right
also to the right you will walk past the Japanese pool with the small pergola
overlooking the pool.

This part of the garden is one that you can just site down on the grass and take
the view in.
at the other side of Morecambe Bay from Grange you can see the small town of
Arnside with the viaduct going
over the bay that carry's the trains that run to Barrow in Furness.

As you walk down the bottom end of the garden, it is possible that you my get a
glimpse
of two unusual things in the limestone rock that has appeared, a lizard and a
gorgon.

Walk round the bottom garden past the outcrop of limestone heading towards the
Fernery
past the big magnolia trees along the small path and wow
look at the tree ferns standing proud in the wood.

A clump of Toadstools in the wood

I hope that you have enjoyed the tour around
